Fall Fundraiser: Telemann in Paris

Music, conversation, food, and drinks–with a taste of Moxie!

Travel back in time to the vibrant salon scene of eighteenth-century France with an afternoon of music by Telemann and some of his French colleagues, performed on historical instruments by guest harpsichordist Jonathan Salzedo and AFM’s baroque ensemble. Along the way, learn how composers like Telemann and Jean-Philippe Rameau were drawn to the science and mathematics of music. Salzedo, who studied mathematics at Oxford University, is your perfect tour guide.

Telemann overcame intense family opposition to become a professional musician. He pointedly turned down an enviable appointment as a court composer for a less paying civic position that afforded more artistic independence. Telemann was also one of the earliest composers to self-publish and successfully market his music throughout Europe. His determination for professional autonomy connects perfectly to our season theme, Music with Moxie.
